Q:What is power tumbling?

A:Power tumbling is performed on a platform made of fiberglass rods and covered with carpeted foam. Tumblers can propel themselves higher than a basketball goal, demonstrating speed, strength and skill, while executing a series of acrobatic maneuvers. Explosive somersaults with multiple flips and twists will be performed by the top-level contenders.

Q: What are rhythmic events and what equipment is used in these events?

A:Rhythmic gymnastics involves body movements and dance combined with the handling of small equipment. The exercise is done with music. The equipment must be handled harmoniously with the body and music. The equipment used in the rhythmic events are: ropes, clubs, hoops and ribbons.

Q: What makes up a successful vault?

A: A successful vault begins with a strong, accelerated run. The best vaulters explode off the board, raisin their feet up over their head with tremendous quickness during the preflight phase of the vault (from the springboard to the vaulting table). When the gymnast pushes off the vaulting tale, the judges are looking for proper body, shoulder and hand position and an instantaneous repulsion. Watch for the height and distance traveled, as well as the number of saltos and twists.

Q: What consists of the parallel bars routine?

A:A parallel bar routine consists of predominately swing elements. Watch for the gymnast who executes swinging elements in which both hands release and regrasp the bars throughout the routine. Some of the better gymnasts move outside the two rails, performing kips and handstands on only one bar.
